It should tell you what to prepare, what the tailor checks, where your choices affect price or timing, and what happens if your Shanghai visit is short. The sequence below is the usual planning framework; the exact appointments remain conditional on your garment, travel dates, and the workshop schedule.

Step 1: Consultation

The Shanghai tailor process starts with a practical conversation at our South Bund shop. We ask what the garment is for, how you want it to feel, and when you need it. Bring one to three reference images if you have them. We use them to discuss silhouette, lapel, pockets, and proportions rather than copying a look without considering your body or schedule. Step 2: Measurement

Next, the tailor records more than 20 body measurements for the custom pattern. Chest, waist, seat, shoulder width, sleeve length, jacket length, rise, thigh, and trouser length are only part of the picture. The session also considers shoulder slope, stance, posture, and the balance between the left and right sides.

Wear a light shirt and ordinary trousers if practical, and mention fit problems you notice in ready-to-wear clothing. A jacket that pulls across the back or trousers that sit differently at the waist give the tailor useful context. Previous measurement cards can help with comparison, but fresh measurements and an in-person posture check remain the starting point.

Step 3: Fabric Selection

Fabric selection is easier when it follows the brief. We narrow the choice by season, formality, travel frequency, wrinkle tolerance, and budget before comparing color or pattern. At South Bund Fabric Market, that may include wool, wool blends, wool-silk, wool-linen, cotton, linen, and fine shirting from Chinese and imported mills.

We explain composition, weight, weave, drape, care, and the tradeoffs between options in English. Tropical wool or a wool-rich blend is often practical for business travel because it recovers from wrinkles, while linen has a softer, more relaxed character. The final quote is confirmed after cloth and construction choices are clear.

Step 4: Fitting

A fitting is where measurements become a garment on your body. You try on the work in progress so the tailor can assess how the jacket hangs, whether the collar sits cleanly, how the shoulder and chest move, where the waist should shape, and how the sleeves and trousers finish. The goal is to inspect the whole balance rather than chase one isolated number.

Walk, sit, button the jacket, and move your arms as you would in normal use. Tell us what feels restrictive or unfamiliar instead of waiting until pickup. Chalk marks and workshop notes guide the next adjustment, and a second fitting may be scheduled when the garment, posture, or order is more complex.

Step 5: Delivery

At the final handoff, the finished garment is pressed and checked before collection. Try it on again when your schedule allows, review the agreed details, and confirm any care instructions. You can collect at Shop 256, discuss hotel delivery in Shanghai, or arrange international shipping when leaving before an in-person handoff is more practical.

For shipping, confirm the recipient name, full address, postcode, country, and mobile number in writing. Carrier timing, cost, tracking, customs, and the limits of remote fit approval should be clear before dispatch. We keep your measurement and fit notes as a starting point for future follow-up, while reconfirming each new order.
